abba

He is closer than the air we breathe. He is more faithful than the ground beneath our feet.

He is God our Father, and if we let his love penetrate our hearts, we may be simultaneously bold and intimate enough to call him Abba.

Jesus calls upon God the Father as Abba, or Daddy, in the most tumultuous time of his life. He acknowledges the power of God to do all things, and yet, he yearns for God’s will in place of his own. Above all else, he trusts in Abba’s love.

“He said, ‘Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.'” Mark 14:36

Abba’s love knows no bounds. It is fearless and relentless, tender and strong. Stronger than death itself. He knew every moment of your life before it came to be, and he chose to die for you. He loved you before you took your first breath.

No matter how many times we run away, he calls us back to his love again and again. He waits patiently for us. He is the Father that joyfully sends us love letters every day with no expectation of return. He is enamored by every one of your quirks – your cool and your crazy – for he delights in who you are.

He aches for you to trust his love, to come out from your hiding place. Let go of the fear that shackles your heart, and let him be your safe place. He will never abandon you. He is never giving up on you. He wants all of you, every part, to be drowned in his grace.

You have never been alone. He loves you in every moment – faithfully and completely.

The whole of your identity rests on this one truth: Abba loves you.

He has always been your Father, and he will always be your Father.
Climb into your Abba’s lap – will you let him love you?

Daddy,
Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation.
